Job 40-41
Head:
God continues interrogating Job. In this passage, the discussion centers largely around the Behemoth and the Leviathan. Speculation about the identity of these two creatures ranges greatly. Some take the creatures to be real animals known today like the hippopotamus or crocodile. Others see animals that once were alive but are not any longer like a woolly mammoth type or a dragon. Still other scholars try to connect the creatures to Ancient Near Eastern concepts of a chaos monster. Another prevalent theory is that they are the personification of angelic/demonic powers. The imagery paints a picture of strength and God’s majesty regardless of the physical identity of behemoth and leviathan.
Heart:
The idea is not to fall into an infatuation with the creature rather than the Creator. As you prepare for Sunday, spend time reflecting on what incites awe in your heart. What does the beauty, strength, or magnificence of those things say about the God who created and sustains them? Imaging how God is above and beyond even our biggest mysteries.
Hands:
Even before the bulk of the passage, Job came to a place in his life where he stopping complaining to God and started listening to God. How can you focus on Him more than your circumstances?
Habits:
Job 38-41 could be seen as a “come to Jesus” meeting. How do you remain open to hearing from Him when He whispers to where He doesn’t have to raise His voice at you. How do you daily habits keep you tethered to Him?
