Matthew 27:3-26

Context:

Jesus has now transitioned from the religious leaders to the Roman authorities. His trial is now a legal case. The current section first wraps up the account of Judas and offers the final judgment of Judas in acknowledging that he was guilty of “betraying innocent blood.” The impending Roman trial series concluded with Pilate claiming innocence in concerning Jesus’s blood. After the trial section, the text continues into the actual crucifixion.

Structure:

27:3-10 “then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, ‘and they took the thirty pieces of silver… and gave them for the potter’s field.” (vv 9-10)

27:11-14 the governor asked Him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” (v 11)

27:15-26 “What evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let Him be crucified!” (v 22)

Key Ideas: culpability, Jesus’s innocence, righteousness

Some things to think about:

  • When is a time you regretted something you have done?
  • Who do you claim Jesus is?
  • In what ways do your actions and thoughts line up? Are you happy with the way you think and the way you live as a result of your thoughts/beliefs?
