Matthew 27:45-66

Context:

Along with the unseen yet attested to events in chapter 28, this section contains the centerpiece of redemption history. Everything in history previous to this moment points towards the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Everything subsequent to the death and resurrection of Jesus reflects back upon and is contingent on the event.

Structure:

27:45-56 Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit (v 50)

27:57-61 Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb… rolled a large stone against the entrance (vv 59-60)

27:62-66 they went and made the tomb secure with the guard, sealing the stone (v 66)

Key Ideas: salvation, atonement, belief

Some things to think about:

  • Picture yourself on the scene as Jesus hung on the cross and died. Take 5-10 minutes and just imagine what it would be like. What would the sights, sounds, smells, etc. be? How would you be impacted?
