Matthew 24:36-35:30

Context:

Continuing discussion concerning the end of times, Jesus shifts slightly to the unexpected nature and suddenness of the Parousia or second coming. After this section, Jesus will discuss the events after His second coming, namely, the judgement. In this section, however, He spends much time indicating the surprising nature of how fast the second coming would be and cautioning them to be ready.

Structure:

24:36-41 “the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.” (v 37)

24:42-44 “the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.” (v 44)

24:45-51 “Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes.” (v 46)

25:1-13 “Be on the alert then, because you do not know the day nor the hour.” (v 13)

25:14-30 “For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.” (v 29)
