There is one and only one living and true God. We find this truth throughout scripture. Deuteronomy 6:4 says, “Listen, Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” 1 Corinthians 8:6 says, “yet for us there is one God, the Father. All things are from him, and we exist for him. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ. All things are through him, and we exist through him.” Yet, we also speak of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, otherwise known as the Trinity. Although the term trinity is not found in the Bible, evidence of this doctrine seeps throughout its pages. How when Jesus was baptized, “the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”” And before Jesus ascended into heaven after his resurrection, He told the disciples to go “and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” And even in the beginning, “the Spirit of God was hovering  over the surface of the waters.” “And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” 

At the same time, we must be careful not to speak as though we believe in three gods, but One. For there is only one God who reveals himself in three persons. We worship one God in trinity and the trinity in unity, neither blending their persons nor dividing their essence. For the person of the Father is a distinct person, the person of the Son is another, and that of the Holy Spirit still another. But the divinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, their glory equal, their majesty coeternal. And we can sing a song like this:

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

All thy works shall praise thy name

In earth and sky and sea.

Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
